This is an unbalanced book that doesn’t deliver on its, in itself promising, main premise: that the idea of the lone inventor is a myth, using the iphone as an example. One exception: the history of the touchscreen is extensive and interesting - covering its many parents outside of Apple, as well as the human interaction team within. After that, other tech is covered too haphazardly leaving so many loose ends. Sometimes the physics and physicists behind the tech are included in the “strong shoulders to stand on†idea, and at other times they are blindingly absent. The book’s coverage of social issues is almost insulting - one should not mention child labour this casually. Also, there appears to be no criticism that Apple avoids one conflict mineral from Congo, but not others. Again, if this is not your main subject or if you can’t or won’t be more critical better leave it out. My guess is the author did not get far speaking to relevant Apple employees, and needed other ways to fill the book. Including, but not limited to, a trip to lithium mines in Chili, that did not get him anything that couldn’t be learned by desk research.
